Mumbai: Editor arrested for reprinting Charlie Hebdo cartoon

images (1)Shireen Dalvi, editor of an Urdu daily newspaper, was arrested on Wednesday by the Mumbra police, for allegedly reprinting a cartoon of Prophet Mohammed that was originally published in Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical weekly magazine. Dalvi was produced in a Thane court on Wednesday.

According to the police, the complainant, Nusrat Ali, had registered a case with the Mumbra police 15 days ago against

Shireen Dalvi, editor of Awadhnama, an Urdu daily newspaper.

Ali alleged that Dalvi’s daily had reprinted cartoons originally published in Charlie Hebdo. A case was registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Four days ago, members of the Rashtriya Ulema Council, along with the complainant, submitted a letter of complaint to a senior police inspector in Mumbra police station.

According to officers, they threatened to protest outside the police station if the editor was not arrested.

“We arrested the woman on Wednesday and she was produced in a Thane court and released on bail,” said a senior police officer from Mumbra police station.
